Homeopathic Remedies Indicated for Flu

In light of the past Bird Flu headlines and as we are in the midst of the flu season here are some homeopathic remedies which are indicated for flu and are safe for home prescribing.  These can be purchased in capsule form from Korres Pharmacy, Eugenia (Tel: 210 722 2774).
Ask for the remedy you require in a 30ch potency and order 4-6 capsules initially.  The remedy should not be taken within half an hour of eating or drinking.  The contents of the capsules (which are absorbed through the mucous membranes of the mouth) should be tipped onto the tongue and sucked until dissolved.
Please read all the information below carefully and remember if symptoms are giving cause for concern or not showing signs of improvement always seek professional advice.

How will homeopathy work for flu?

Homeopathy is an individual treatment, you are matching your individual symptoms to the symptoms of the remedy.  What the remedy will do is to stimulate the bodies own healing process, ease the symptoms and shorten the duration of the illness, therefore aiding recovery.  Of course this needs to be complemented by rest, plenty of fluids and building up strength once the acute stage has passed.

TOP TIP:  EUPHATORIUM PERFOLIATUM HAS BEEN PRESCRIBED TO SOME OF MY PATIENTS THIS SEASON FOR FLU ALTHOUGH GELSEMIUM IS OFTEN THE MOST INDICATED REMEDY IN FLU OUTBREAKS.

What other measures may be helpful?

Vitamin C (1000mg for adults, if available).
Echinacea tincture - helpful to boost the immune system.
Chewable zinc lozenges if throat is affected.

Warm drinks with honey, lemon, fresh ginger.

Herbs which can be used as teas and are helpful for coughs include: peppermint, sage and moloha (if you are taking medication always check that a herb or supplement is not contraindicated).

Can I use the homeopathic medicine alongside conventional medication?

The homeopathic medicine can be used alongside conventional medication, however be aware that conventional medication (whether Tamiflu or Depon etc) may change the symptom picture and make it difficult to match your symptoms to a remedy.  If you are using any conventional medication try and note down how your symptoms were prior to starting the medication and this will more accurately guide you to the correct homeopathic prescription.  Do not stop medication that has been prescribed by your doctor and always seek professional advice if you have symptoms which concern you or which persist.

How often would I need to take the remedy?

The remedy may need frequent repetition, every 2 hours, or more if symptoms are very acute.  Reduce as symptoms improve, 3 times a day is a rough guide.  As soon as relief is felt it is important to stop taking the remedy as it will have stimulated the body enough that it  can use its own powers to recuperate.  Symptoms will often start to improve after 1-3 doses.  The remedy may be incorrect if you are not responding to it.  Bear in mind that there are thousands of homeopathic medicines, these are just a select few and may not totally match your symptoms.  If this is the case seek professional advice as a more suitable prescription can then be found.
